The Holocaust Educational Trust has partnered with Yad Vashem in Jerusalem for the seventh consecutive year, as part of our ongoing Teacher Study Visit programme – which gives teachers from the UK the opportunity to learn from international experts and visit Holocaust sites, memorials, and research centres.

23 teachers from across the UK took part in the intensive annual teacher training course, which ran from August 3rd-12th 2012. The Israel-based sessions are part of a six-month programme that includes UK-based seminars as well.

During the seminar, participants attended lectures led by some of the leading Holocaust academics from the International School of Holocaust Studies (ISHS) including Professor Yehuda Bauer and Dr Efraim Zuroff from the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Jerusalem who spoke about efforts to bring Nazi war criminals to justice.  Other lectures focused on Jewish life before the war; the establishment of ghettos; and Nazi ideological beliefs.  In addition, a number of workshops were designed to help the group improve their delivery of Holocaust education in the classroom including a session on using film and survivor testimony.

Rosalyn McClymont, Leader of RE, PSHE and Citizenship at Teign School in Devon, commented: “I am honoured to have been able to visit the world’s leading Holocaust education centre and participate in the Holocaust Educational Trust’s teacher training course.  It has been so valuable to have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field of Holocaust education, and I look forward to returning to my classroom with the tools and experience to educate my students about this challenging subject.”

Alex Maws, Head of Education at the Holocaust Educational Trust, added: “We are thrilled to be working with Yad Vashem to offer British teachers a specifically designed programme to enhance their understanding of the Holocaust. Each of our participants was chosen for their commitment and motivation to developing their understanding in this area, and over the 10-day seminar, they received the practical guidance and detailed knowledge needed to educate their students sensitively about the Holocaust.”

Our Annual Teacher Training Course and Teacher Study Visits are supported by a grant from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.
