Comment on the verdict of the Demjanjuk trial

alt

Following the conviction in Munich yesterday of John Demjanjuk, who was found guilty of helping to murder more than 28,000 Jews at Sobibor extermination camp, Chairman of the Holocaust Educational Trust and former war crimes investigator Lord Janner said “The verdict of this trial sends an unequivocal message, namely that the passage of time is no barrier to justice – and that age or poor health cannot absolve anyone of appalling crimes. However, Demjanjuk’s release pending appeal raises the very troubling prospect that he may never serve even the short prison term to which he was sentenced."
Ukrainian-born Demjanjuk was sentenced to five years in prison but will be freed pending appeal. Lord Janner’s comments and more information about the trial and the verdict can be found here and here.
