An Israeli Holocaust survivor has been named as the world's oldest living man, at the age of 112 and 178 days.
Israel Kristal is a Holocaust survivor who was interned in the Łódź ghetto before later being used as slave labour in Auschwitz and other camps. His first wife and two children were murdered during the Holocaust.
In 1950, he moved to Israel with his second wife, settling in Haifa. He received the certificate confirming him as the oldest living man in the world from Marco Frigatti, Head of Records for Guinness World Records, at his home on Friday.
When asked about the secret of his longevity, Kristal said: “I don’t know the secret for long life. I believe that everything is determined from above and we shall never know the reasons why.
“There have been smarter, stronger and better looking men than me who are no longer alive. All that is left for us to do is to keep on working as hard as we can and rebuild what is lost."
