Today, Sunday 27th January 2019, marks Holocaust Memorial Day and the 74th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Commenting, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, Karen Pollock MBE, said:
“On Holocaust Memorial Day we remember the six million men, women and children who were brutally murdered simply because they were Jewish. The theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is “Torn from Home” – it’s a theme that invites us to reflect on the communities destroyed, the traditions which were lost and that will never return, the families separated forever and, of course, the survivors who had no home to return to.
“Today we pay tribute to the victims, who no longer have a voice. We also honour those who survived and who continue to share their testimony with others.
“The Holocaust was one of the darkest episodes in our history and must never be forgotten. So today we pledge to redouble our efforts to carry on the legacy, to remember all the victims and to be louder than ever in defending the truth of the past.”
