Programme overview
Our Exploring the Holocaust: Sources and Sites project will explore Britain’s relationship to the Holocaust at locations in Liverpool, Belfast and Harwich. Each one-day programme will engage with regional histories to develop discussions about pre-war Jewish migration and examine community stories of refugee life in wartime Britain, including histories of internment. Our focus on regional stories also provides scope to discuss collective community action, as well as the experiences of Anglo-Jewish communities across Britain. Overarching topics for each of the visits will consider the response of the British Government to the threat of Nazism, the plight of Jewish refugees and the Holocaust, as well as the impact of British antisemitism on pre-and-post war migration to the UK.
Discussions will be held at a variety of sites across each location. Group discussions will be supported by historical sources, encompassing extant documents produced by governmental and charitable bodies, regional and national newspapers, the Mass Observation archive, and archival testimony recordings.
The programmes in Liverpool and Belfast will be delivered by Martin Winstone, Senior Historical Advisor at the Holocaust Educational Trust, Project Historian at the UK Holocaust Memorial, and author of The Holocaust Sites of Europe and The Dark Heart of Hitler’s Europe.
The programme in Harwich will be led by Mike Levy, in partnership with the Harwich Kindertransport Memorial & Learning Trust. Mike Levy is a researcher for the UK Holocaust Memorial and the Association of Jewish Refugees, and author of Get the Children Out! Unsung Heroes of the Kindertransport.

Who should register?
Registration is invited from primary and secondary trainees and teachers of any subject. We welcome participation from more than one teacher from each school.
How much does it cost?
The course is free to attend. The Trust will provide packed lunches and where necessary public transport between sites during each one-day programme. Please note that these visits will require some walking between sites, please do contact us if you have any concerns.
Participants are asked to cover the costs of their own travel to Liverpool, Belfast and Harwich.
