The Holocaust Educational Trust is pleased to invite applications for our Teacher Study Visit to Prague and Terezín, which will take place in May 2018.

27-30 May 2018

Application deadline: Monday 5 March 2018

Programme overview

Our Teacher Study Visits are advanced site-based training courses which focus on the richness and diversity of pre-war Jewish life and on the complexity of the history of the Holocaust. The on-site sessions are academically rigorous and interactive, incorporating testimonies, images, primary source documents, poetry, artworks and other stimuli that encourage teachers to discuss and critically evaluate issues within Holocaust education and when using authentic Holocaust-related sites with students.

This visit will explore two of the most significant sites in the history of the Holocaust: Prague, one of the great historic centres of European Jewish life, and Terezín (Theresienstadt), the unique ghetto created to hold Czech and prominent German and Austrian Jews prior to their deportation to the killing centres of eastern Europe. We will address a wide range of themes including pre-war Jewish life and culture, the Kindertransport to Britain, perpetrators of the Holocaust, and Jewish resistance, with particular reference to the remarkable cultural life of Terezín.

Feedback from previous Teacher Study Visits:

So many ideas I want to take to the classroom now I feel much more informed and confident about purpose.

Home after a brilliant 4 days of CPD with HET. So much to reflect upon and add to my teaching.

It has given me a sense of purpose. The investment HET has made in me has succeeded in adapting my teaching and the teaching of others in my school for the better.

Who should apply?

Applications are invited from teachers of any subject area who are currently in post. Participants are required to be available for the entirety of the course.

How much does it cost?

The course is free to attend. The Trust will provide meals and accommodation for the duration of the course. Participants are asked to cover the costs of their own travel to central Prague, though the Trust can write a letter to their headteacher, requesting that these be covered by their school’s CPD budget.
