TEACHER TRAINING

The Trust is internationally recognised for our expertise in training teachers in Holocaust pedagogy best practice. We deliver cross-curricular teacher training to both PGCE and other graduate trainees and to practising teachers as part of their Continuing Professional Development.
Our experienced team of trainers all come from teaching backgrounds and are among the UK’s leading experts on current best practices in Holocaust education.
Teachers are invited to apply for places on our range of courses, and schools, universities, Local Authorities and other organizations are encouraged to contact us to arrange a bespoke training to meet your needs.
BESPOKE WORKSHOPS
Partnering with Universities & Initial Teacher Training Providers
- The Trust works with a variety of universities and other Initial Teacher Training institutions across the United Kingdom, delivering intensive sessions for trainee teachers from a variety of curriculum areas, including History, Religious Studies, English and Citizenship. We also work with cross-curricular groups focusing on the teaching of the Holocaust in the PSHE curriculum.
- We offer bespoke training sessions that last from 90 minutes to a full day. These sessions focus on the pedagogical issues surrounding Holocaust education and demonstrate practical ideas and classroom activities. Trainee teachers also have the opportunity to receive a free copy of Recollections, Eyewitnesses Remember the Holocaust – our BAFTA award winning DVD-ROM which integrates testimony from 18 eyewitnesses of the Holocaust.
- In the past academic year the Trust has worked with over 500 trainee teachers from institutions including the University of Warwick PGCE History, the University of Reading PGCE English, Bath Spa University PGCE RE, the University of Brighton B.Ed, Robert Owen Group SCITT and Nottingham Trent University GTP.

Partnering with Schools
- The Trust works with teachers in both Primary and Secondary schools across the United Kingdom delivering INSET trainings and twilight sessions to teachers from across the curriculum areas.
- These sessions can focus on one particular subject area or can be delivered with an emphasis on a cross-curricular approach to the teaching of the Holocaust.
- Workshops can last from 90 minutes to a full day, with a focus on the pedagogical issues surrounding Holocaust education and demonstrations of practical ideas and classroom resources.

Partnering with Local Authorities
- The Trust partners with Local Authorities to deliver regional Continuing Professional Development training seminars. These CPD sessions can be targeted at either Primary or Secondary teachers or a combination of the two.
- The training sessions focus on the principles of effective Holocaust education as well as showcasing classroom resources that are available from the Trust. In the past academic year we have worked with the London Borough of Newham, Rochdale, and Durham Local Authorities.

Partnering with Educational Organisations
- The Trust regularly works with other educational organisations to support their work and promote Holocaust education. Members of our education team have recently presented at the Schools History Project Conference, Learning and Teaching Scotland Conference, the Imperial War Museum North and the London Association for the Teaching of English.
- The Trust also works closely with the teaching unions. We have recently produced educational resources with the National Union of Teachers and delivered educational sessions at the ATL conference.

COURSES FOR TEACHERS
Annual Teacher Training Course
- This intensive course, now in its seventh year, consists of academic lectures on themes relevant to the Holocaust and related pedagogical workshops. The course is composed of three parts including a one day introductory seminar, a 10-day visit to Yad Vashem in Israel and a follow up weekend.
- The course gives teachers the opportunity to hear from leading Holocaust academics to enhance their own subject knowledge, allows for reflection on current classroom practice and showcases lesson ideas and resources.

Teacher Study Visits
- Our Teacher Study Visits are an advanced training courses which focus on the richness and complexity of the history of the Holocaust. The visits are based around a series of key Holocaust related sites in and around Berlin and Paris. The on-site sessions are academically rigorous and interactive, incorporating testimonies, images, primary source documents, poetry and other stimuli that challenge teachers to discuss and critically evaluate issues within Holocaust education and when using authentic Holocaust related sites with students
One-Day Teacher Study Seminars
- The Trust organises a series of one-day teacher study seminars. These seminars provide an opportunity for teachers to hear from leading academics in Holocaust studies and update their own subject knowledge. Speakers at recent seminars have included Stephen Feinberg of the United States Holocaust Memorial, Dr Tom Lawson, University of Winchester, Martin Winstone, Author of the Holocaust Sites of Europe, and John Dobai, Holocaust survivor.
Lessons from Auschwitz CPD for Teachers
- This is a four-part professional development course offered to teachers from any subject area. Modeled after our flagship Lessons from Auschwitz course for post-16 students, the Teacher CPD version of the course is held annually and compromises of a one-day visit to Poland and two educational seminars.
- The course is open to secondary and post-16 teachers. We encourage schools to send two teachers to support one another throughout this unique and challenging course, and to develop a cross-curricular, whole school approach to Holocaust education.

Holocaust Education Development Programme
- A free Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme available to secondary school teachers in England is offered by the Holocaust Education Development Programme (HEDP) at the Institute of Education (IOE), University of London. HEDP is jointly funded by the Pears Foundation and the Department for Education (DfE) with support from the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET). Details available at www.hedp.org.uk.
