Teachers Visit Yad Vashem for Intensive CPD

Twenty two teachers from across the UK, representing a range of subject areas, attended a 10-day training seminar from 5th-14th August in Israel as part of the Holocaust Educational Trust’s annual CPD course.
The course, now in its sixth year, is organised by the Trust in partnership with the Yad Vashem International School for Holocaust Studies in Jerusalem. It includes UK-based seminars held before and after the visit to Israel and offers teachers the opportunity to enhance their understanding of the Holocaust and develop their skills to effectively deliver Holocaust education in their classrooms.
During the Israel seminar, participants had the opportunity to hear lectures led by some of the world’s leading Holocaust academics including Yehuda Bauer, who spoke about the Holocaust in relation to other genocides, and Efraim Zuroff, Director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Jerusalem, who spoke about efforts to bring Nazi war criminals to justice. Other lectures focused on Jewish life before the War; the establishment of the Ghettoes; Jewish resistance; and Nazi ideological beliefs.
Course participants will reconvene in November for their final seminar. This year, thanks to a new partnership with the University of Hull, participants will also have the opportunity to earn MA-level credits through their work on the course.
“We are thrilled to be working with Yad Vashem to offer British teachers a specifically designed programme to enhance their understanding of the Holocaust, “ said Karen Pollock, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust. “Each of our participants have been chosen for their commitment and motivation to developing their understanding in this area, and over the 10-day seminar, will receive the practical guidance and detailed knowledge needed to educate their students sensitively about the Holocaust.”
