Why We Speak? An Interview with Second Generation Speaker Lu Lawrence: A Multi-School Online Event for Secondary Schools - 24 November 2023

On Friday 24th November 10am-11:30am via Zoom Lu Lawrence will speak about her late father, Zigi Shipper BEM. Zigi was born in Lodz, Poland in 1930. At ten years old he found himself working as a slave labourer in the Lodz Ghetto. Four years later in 1944, he was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. After a few weeks he was moved to Stutthof concentration camp before being sent on a Death March in 1945. He was liberated by British troops on 3rd May 1945. Zigi came to the UK in 1947, where he met his wife, Jeannette. They had two daughters – Michelle and Lu.

Both of his daughters encouraged Zigi to speak publicly about his experiences and throughout his life Zigi spoke to hundreds of schools sharing the message “do not hate”. Lu started speaking about Zigi’s story of survival a few years ago.

Marking 85 Years Since the Start of the Kindertransport: A Multi-School Online Event for Primary Schools - 1 December 2023

December 2023 will mark 85 Years since the arrival of the first Kindertransport in the UK. On Friday 1st December from 10am-11:30am via Zoom, the Holocaust Educational Trust invites Year 6/S1 students to listen to the testimony of Bob Kirk BEM, one of the many children who arrived on the Kindertransport. The Kindertransport was the organised rescue mission of Jewish children from Nazi controlled territory between 1938-1939.Th e Kindertransport is estimated to have saved the lives of some 10,000 Jewish children.

Students will take part in a short lesson before hearing Bob’s testimony and will have the chance to ask Bob your own questions in the short Q&A session. To sign up, please register here.

Holocaust Educational Trust Book Club - 27th November 2023

Our November HET Book Club will focus onBurgenland: Village Secrets and the First Tremors of the Holocaust by David Joseph KC. This meeting will take place on Monday 27th November from 4:30pm via Zoom.

This book is an exploration of Jewish history over the past 300 years in Central Europe, following the story of one Jewish family who had settled in Burgenland, Austria. This work potently highlights the escalation of violence against the Jews of Austria after the Nazi occupation in March 1938. For this discussion, we will be joined by David Joseph KC to hear more about the book.
