The Holocaust Educational Trust is delighted to invite registrations for our free Exploring the Holocaust: Sources and Sites teacher study visit, which will take place in Manchester on Sunday 18 October.

The Sources and Sites programme explores cities’ diverse and usually little-known connections to the Holocaust. By tying the Holocaust to local history, we aim to give participants new and engaging ways to approach the subject in their teaching.

This one-day visit will explore the hidden histories of a range of sites in central Manchester which bring to life key issues including:

• British knowledge of the Holocaust whilst it was happening, including Manchester’s role in informing the world;
• The experiences of Jewish and other refugees from Nazism and fascism who came to the North West;
• The role of British society in helping refugees;
• Wartime internment of refugees;
• The responses of Manchester society, including the Jewish community, to the Holocaust;
• Mancunian victims of the Holocaust;
• Antisemitism in Britain before, during and after the Holocaust.

Although Manchester is the focus on the visit, we will address histories which impacted sites across the North West of England, and will provide guidance on how teachers and their students can carry out their own investigations into Holocaust-related histories in any locality.

All participants will receive a booklet containing an extensive selection of primary sources which they can use in their own teaching, accompanied by links to further resources to support them.

The programme will be delivered by Martin Winstone, Senior Historical Advisor at the Holocaust Educational Trust and Project Historian for the UK Holocaust Memorial.

Please note that the visit will require walking between sites; all routes are paved and generally flat. Please do contact us if you have any concerns.

Who should register?

We welcome primary and secondary teachers, including trainees, of any subject. The content is highly relevant not only to teachers of the Holocaust, but also to teachers of GCSE History units on migration. There is no limit on the number of participants per institution.

How much does it cost?

The visit is free to attend. The Trust will additionally provide lunch at a stop in central Manchester.
